Dr. Karan is an Assistant Professor at Sociology Department at Başkent University, Turkey. He has received her B.A. degree from Political Science from Bilkent University in 2002. In 2003, he completed his master’s degree in European Political Sociology with the thesis: “Social Exclusion of Immigrants from Channels of Participation in Sweden”. After completion of master’s degree, he attended doctoral level thematic courses on social exclusion at Stockholm University’s International Graduate Programme.  He has received her Ph.D from London Metropolitan University, UK, with the thesis: “Collective Resource Mobilisation for Economic Survival within the Turkish Speaking Communities in London ” in 2015.


Currently, he is the project coordinator of a research titled as: “Masculinity and Driving Performances”. He is also one of the researchers in “A New Perspective on the Processes of Adaptation and Integration of Urban Refugees: A Social Innovation Experiment Aimed at Building Inclusive Cities”. His specialisation fields are:

  • Economic Sociology

  • Collective Action

  • Labour Sociology

  • Masculinity  Studies

  • Qualitative Analysis
